My 39th recipe, “Kaara Pidi Kozhukattai", a very easy dish anyone can prepare. Before marriage, my mom used to prepare this rarely for breakfast. So honestly I do not have a huge like or dislike for this recipe. But after marriage, since this is one of RK's favorite breakfast, I try to make it atleast once in a every 2 weeks or so. This is perfect for a weekend breakfast, when you want to have something real quick, but are lazy to spend a long time in kitchen. Traditionally this kozhukattai is made by grinding rice which has been soaking overnight. But I have adapted the recipe to suite my lifestyle, by using store bought rice flour. There would be no change in taste and it goes wonderfully well with a simple onion tomato chutney.

To temper |
Method:-
1) | Heat a pan with oil; add the mustard, let it splutter and then add other items mentioned under "To temper".
2) | Now add the salt, water and wait it comes to a boil.
3) | Lower the flame to medium, add the rice flour and grated coconut, and keep stirring until the mixture does not stick to the pan. Leave it to cool for a few minutes.
4) | Now, take a small portion of the mixture and form a elliptical shape with your palm. "Pidi" in Tamil mean "To Hold". Since you are making this shape trying to hold the dough with your palms, the dish is called as Pidi Kozhukattai. Cook the kozhukattai in a idli cooker for about 10 mins.
5) | Enjoy hot with chutney.
Notes:-
• | Use a coarse rice flour for this recipe. Using a fine flour will not give a nice texture.
• | I used red rice flour. Hence the dish is in that color. Generally it will be white in color.
• | Adjust the water quantity according to the flour you are using. In most case 1:1 ½ ratio should be fine.
• | If you are not able to form the desired shapes, sprinkle additional water, mix and try. |
