My 290th recipe, “Garlic Herb and Parmesan Dinner Rolls”, the perfect addition to the table for a flavorful dinner. A dinner roll which is so soft, spongy and loaded with my favorite flavors of garlic and parmesan.
I have decided to give you all a break from Mango Mania. After making and enjoying 3 wonderful desserts with mango, thought that it is time to give my body some rest. So instead of loading it up with some more sugar, decided to go the savory route. Don’t get too dejected, it is just for today and moreover I have a equally fabulous recipe for today.
I am used to have chapati or other Indian tiffin items for dinner. The first time I had bread for dinner was while visiting the Olive Garden restaurant. When I ordered their famous minestrone soup, they served a few breadsticks on the side. That was certainly an unique experience. I even dunked the fresh baked bread in the hot soup and it tasted so delicious. After that day, I got the chance to enjoy breadsticks or dinner rolls on the side at multiple other restaurants. I even started baking my own bread or dinner rolls at times for dinner.
I guess I have mentioned it in a few of my earlier posts. Weekends are for celebrating, and in my world, a movie night on Friday along with pizza for dinner makes RK a very happy man. Since I am bored of always ordering pizza from outside, I decided that I will instead bake something at home. For a change, I thought I will make dinner rolls. Something which I could keep munching away while watching the movie. Since a plain dinner roll would not make the cut on a weekend, I decided to incorporate additional flavors I love.
I am so happy to report that the parmesan dinner rolls turned out so perfect on the very first attempt. These Garlic Herb and Parmesan Dinner Rolls are so soft, light and fluffy. I always like a little bit of fresh herb flavor in my baked goods. These dinner rolls are loaded with fresh parsley making each bite so refreshing. And strangely, if there is one flavor which both RK and myself love, it is garlic. And these dinner rolls has garlic flavor in abundance. And what is a roll without cheese ? This has a complete layer of freshly grated parmesan cheese. A truly well rounded combo of flavors.
Unlike other dinner rolls, which more or less resemble a bun, these are actual rolls. Just like a cinnamon roll. But a savory version. When perfectly made you will be able to separate out each soft and fluffy layer of the roll. While these are just delicious on their own, you can also serve them along with a small bowl of marinara sauce. You will surely be then addicted and crave these dinner rolls for every night 😉
Garlic Herb and Parmesan Dinner Rolls
Garlic Herb and Parmesan Cheese Dinner Rolls are soft and fluffy dinner rolls you can easily bake at home. Perfect on the side for dinner.
- Milk - 1/2 Cup
- Water - 1/4 Cup
- Butter - 2 Tbsp
- Sugar - 1 Tbsp
- Salt - 1/2 tsp
- Active Dry yeast - 1 packet
- All purpose flour - 2 Cups *Refer notes
- Garlic - 2 cloves
- Fresh Parsley - 1/4 Cup
- Olive Oil - 1 Tbsp + For brushing
- Parmesan Cheese - 3/4 Cup Grated
- First add the milk, water and butter to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave it for about 1 min or so until it is stilghtly warm to touch (In the range of about 110 - 120 F).
- Transfer the milk mixture to a larger mixing bowl. Add the sugar, salt and yeast to the warm milk mixture and mix well until combined. Leave it aside for 1 min.
- Now, add about 3/4 Cup of all purpose flour to the bowl and mix well until combined. Add 1/4 Cup of flour at a time to the dough and keep working until combined. Keep adding the flour until the dough reaches the desired consistency.
- Transfer the dough to a smooth surface and knead for about 10 mins. Initially the dough will be sticky but eventually you should get a non sticky bouncy dough. Keep the dough covered for about 15 mins with a damp cloth in a dark place. The dough would slightly rise.
- Meanwhile, add the garlic, parsley and olive oil to a blender/mixie and grind to a coarse paste. Keep aside.
- Transfer the dough back to the smooth surface. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough into a rectangle with a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Add the ground herb garlic paste to the top of the flattened dough.
- Evenly spread out the herb garlic paste on top of the dough. Now sprinkle the parmesan evenly on top of the dough.
- Roll the dough carefully across the long end of the rectangle. Roll completely until you get the shape of a log. Make sure to seal the loose edges together.Cut the log into 12 equal pieces.
- Transfer the pieces to a greased 9X9 square pan. Cover the pan with a wet cloth and leave it in a dark place for about 45 mins until it doubles in size.
- Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease the top of the rolls with olive oil and then bake the rolls in the oven for about 20 mins until nicely golden on top.
- Serve warm.
- Adjust the quantity of garlic and parmesan cheese as per taste.
- For a milder garlic flavor, substitute fresh garlic with garlic powder as needed.
- The quantity of flour needed would depend on the brand used and altitude where cooking. That is the reason why we add 1/4 Cup of flour at a time. You might require less or more than 2 Cups of flour. So do adjust looking at the consistency of the dough.
- The liquid should be warm while adding the yeast. If it is cold, the yeast will not activate. If it is too hot, the yeast will be killed.
